Brain Injury Facts

1.6 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury each year;

in fact a brain injury occurs every 21 seconds! In Rhode Island, a brain injury occurs every hour!

At least 11,000 Rhode Islanders

suffered some level of brain injury in 2013. (DOH, 2013)

The cost of traumatic brain injury

in the U.S. is estimated to be over$56.3 billion annually. Hospitalization accounts for $31.7 billion, and fatal brain injuries cost the nation $16.6 billion each year.

The risk of TBI is highest among

adolescents, young adults and those older than 75.

Falls are now the leading cause

of traumatic brain injury as well as the leading cause of brain injury in the elderly.
